Provenance: Sotheby's, Belgravia, The Dalziel Family: Engravers and Illustrators: from the studio of Herbert Dalziel, May 1978

Herbert Dalziel's extraordinary landscapes were largely re-discovered when a number (including this painting) appeared at a Sotheby's sale of works from the Dalziel family in 1978. Plagued with ill health for much of his life, Dalziel's produced relatively few pictures in his own lifetime and they are very rarely seen on the market, not a single one apparently appearing at auction in the last decade. Through his family firm, Dalziel would have known Whistler and the same preoccupation with the abstract qualities of tone and light characterise his paintings. His work appears in Kenneth McKonkey's 2005 Yale catalogue, Impressionism in Britain, McKonkey admiring his "...jewel-like landscapes which adopt a sophisticated divisionism...the sense of atmosphere and weird luminosity draws comparisons with contemporary photography and the mystic landscapes of Knopff."
