Signed l.l.: Olga Lehmann
Oil on panel, 27 1/2 by 19 ins (70 by 48 cm)
Following her time at the Slade, Lehmann established herself as one of the leading mural painters of the 1930s, executing work for the Palace Hotel in Buxton, on the exterior of the Queen Victoria Railway Bridge for George V?s Silver Jubilee in 1935 and for the Workers Canteens in World War Two. The present panel was rescued from the New Theatre in London, on whose refurbishment Lehmann worked in the mid 1930s. It is an outstanding example of the type of late English Art Deco design that continued to thrive in this country until after the end of World War Two.
