Walter Sickert, RA

1860-1942

At the Mantlepiece Mirror

Ref: 1261

Signed l.r.: Rd.St.ARA

Soft pencil on light brown paper, 27 by 23 cm

The present work has also been known as "The Landlady" but appears to relate to a series of drawings of women at mantlepieces from c.1911, some of which may have been used to help pupils relate figures to their backgrounds in an interior where Sickert taught at Rowlandson House (see Wendy Baron, Sickert: Paintings & Drawings, Yale University Press, New Haven and London, 2006, p.386-87, cat.no.380.1-380.11). The same vase that appears to the left of this drawing may be the same as that in Baron cats no.380.6, 380,8 and 380.9.
