Beaton's designs for a production of Love's Labour's Lost at the Old Vic in 1954 were his first for a Shakespeare play. John Gielgud wrote of the designs: "The simplicity and ingenuity of the whole design serves the play most admirably and the clothes are beautiful, striking and poetic."
