Scott trained at the Royal Academy Schools where he was a pupil of Bartolozzi. He became well-known as an engraver and portrait painter and was engraver to the Duke of York and (subsequently) a painter to the Prince of Wales. The present work comes from an album of the artist's work from c.1780 consisting of mainly Royal portrait studies including of Queen Caroline and her children. Many were sketched at Windsor and are apparently annotated in the artist's own hand.
