Appleton was a prominent illustrator of children's books from the earlier part of the twentieth century, amongst them some well-regarded editions of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. Her highly decorative plates regularly incorporated the related text caption as part of the image. In 1915 she illustrated The Child of the Sea being the story of Amadis and Oriana by S.R.Littlewood. This watercolour was used as one of the eight plates for the book.
