Brownsword was Royal Exhibitioner at the Royal College of Art before the First World War, later teaching modelling at Regent Street Polytechnic where he was principle from 1938 to 1951. He created many fine War Memorials in the inter-War years, including those at Eccleshill, Thornton, North Allerton, Hanley and Longton. He also created highly collectable decorative work for Carter, Stabler and Adams at Poole Pottery and Harmon Pottery, his interest perhaps fostered by his early life around the Potteries in Staffordshire, where his father is thought to have worked as a bookkeeper for Wedgwood.
