The magnificent High Gothic church of Sainte Jacques dominates the centre of Dieppe and appears in numerous works by painters who visited the city, amongst them Fry's contemporary (and at times friendly critical advisory) Walter Sickert. Fry visited Dieppe a number of times on his visits to France from the 1920s and in the same year as the present work executed some fine lithographs of the church's exterior and interior. A copy of a print of its interior by Fry from 1927 is in the collection of the British Museum (no.1933,1014.11).
