The fine thirteenth century Pont Vieux (also known as Pont Saint-Julien or Pont de Mayenne) was the only bridge that crossed the Mayenne river at Laval until the early nineteenth century. Southall painted this view of it in a trip to France in April and May 1933, also taking in Paris, La Rochelle and Angers.
