Southall and his wife made an Autumnal trip to France in September and October 1929 – taking in Paris, Lille, Cahors, Cordes and Albi. The particular seasonal light of Southern Europe greatly appealed to him – as is so evident in the beautiful Autumn glow of the present watercolour, which depicts the southern French town’s great medieval bridge from below. A similar work, but from a higher vantage point across the river, was acquired by Southall’s fellow Birmingham Quaker and philanthropist, Paul Strangman Cadbury, in 1930.
