Arthur Joseph Gaskin, RBSA (1862-1928) was one of Joseph Southall’s closest friends.  They met in 1883 when both were studying at the Birmingham School of Art.  It was also at the School of Art that Gaskin met his future wife, Georgie France.  Along with Southall they became founding members of the informal group of artists and craftsmen known as the Birmingham Group.  Probably best known for their Arts and Crafts jewellery, Arthur and Georgie Gaskin began designing and making pieces together in 1899.  In addition, they produced enamels, silver work and book illustrations.  Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery hold a very large collection of their work.
