Nash worked out many of his most visionary visual ideas in the illustrations he produced for an edition of Thomas Browne’s Urn Burial and the Garden of Cyrus in the early 1930s. The unease of many of these illustrations, particularly the present one, aptly reflect the unsettled backdrop of the early 1930s.
