Within a year of the AIA’s foundation and in the wake of its success, The Left Review emerged, a magazine largely backed by the Communist Party, with cartoons commissioned from James Boswell (who was its art editor), as well as his friends James’ Fitton and Holland amongst others. Only lasting until 1938, it nevertheless spawned some fine satirical cartoons, the artists given free-rein to satirise the government and establishment of the day. Hatton Garden, Empire Builders and others are typical of Boswell’s work for the publication, executed in the artist’s own George Grosz-influenced style.
